Notes for Joseph Yates:
blacksmith & cordwainer (shoemaker) came from England ca1669 as a British soldier and was stationed at Fort Orange (Albany New York). He may have come from Leeds Yorkshire England. He received pay for service in a fort North of Fort Orange. Yates sued another soldier 4 July 1676 for using his horse without permission, to take a girl on a joy ride. A few accounts say JOSEPH came over in 1664 with Gov. Nichols when the English took control from the Dutch. See the History of Schenectady NY (1902) by Judge Austin A. Yates. 1669 is probably correct. In 1713 JOSEPH YATES lived on the East corner of Beaver & Green Streets in Albany NY. In 1693 JOSEPH petitioned Gov. Fletcher for 20 pounds due him for wood furnished the fort, "this being all he has to look to for support of his wife and 7 children." [Note: if JOSEPH had 7 children in 1693 we are missing 4 or 5 children in our list] JOSEPH YATES was buried 22 May 1730 Albany NY in the Albany Reformed Dutch Church cemetery. A later church building was built over this cemetery. [Note: oil portraits of some of the Van Bommel family and of Col. Stoffel (Christoffel) Yates of Schenectady NY, Great Grandson of JOSEPH YATES, are in the Schenectady Historical Society, 28 Washington Avenue. They also have a painting depicting Captain John Glenn claiming his relatives to safety after the 1690 burning of Schenectady by the French & Indians. John Glenn was accorded this privilege because he had befriended a French Priest and saved him from hostile Indians a few years earlier. In 1692 our Grandfather Gerrit Lansing married to Catharine (Glenn) Ditmars, widow of Cornelis Barentse Van Ditmars who was killed in the 1690 raid. Catharine was Gerrit's first wife, not our Grandmother. Glenn selected so many people the Indians stopped him, claiming he could not have so many relatives.
